OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE – Do you know where you were 25 Years ago? Well, Dennis Jarvis does, he had just opened his first surf shop, Spyder Boards in Hermosa Beach on PCH. Since then Dennis and his partner Dickie O’Reilly have opened two shops and have grown their surfboard brand into an internationally recognized label, who’s boards have graced the cover of countless magazine covers.
In commemoration of Spyder Boards 25 years of community service and surf industry influence the shop decided to throw a demo. The event actually turned into a festival, that brought more than 6,000 people (according to the local Fire Department) to Downtown Hermosa Beach, resulting in the biggest surf/skate festival that Los Angeles has ever seen.
Autographs were signed by surf legends such as Mark Occilupo, Shane Dorian, Damien Hobgood and Dane Reynolds. As if that wasn’t enough, Red Bull built a SICK street course that was shredded by top skate pros like Chad Tim Tim, Jeron Wilson, Joey Berzinski, Danny Supa and Danny Castillo.
Musical entertainment was provided by Dread Star, Tomorrows Bad Seeds, The Darlings, Timmy Curran and Brad Gerlach’s band Musket. In between sets, there were fashion shows featuring the latest wears, dawned by the South Bays most beautiful ladies. Closing out the demo, Dennis Jarvis (the owner of Spyder Boards) was awarded Shaper of the Year for the second time. Once the awards ceremony was done, the demo rolled over to the after-party, hosted by Sector 9, at the local watering hole Sangria.
LA is better known for its movie stars and rock n’ roll legends, not for its surf shops.
It’s not everyday that an owner operated core shop accomplishes such a milestone as celebrating their 25-year anniversary. This celebration is a true testament that the spirit of surf/skate still genuinely exists in this day of mainstream popularity. The overall good that Spyder has done for its community and industry can only be measured by their happy customers…thank you!
