Suzi Noyes is a mom of 2 young boys, Connor and Payton. Connor has Autism and Payton ADHD. Five years ago their passion for surfing started when they participated in Surfers Healing and rocked it. She thinks there is something magical about kids with autism and surfing. After seeing how much her children benefited from being in the water, Noyes decided to create surfing events for kids with autism, the first of which will be held at Croatan Beach, Virginia, from August 13-16. Here’s more from Noyes:
“My surfing passion started about 5 years ago. My youngest son, Connor, has Autism and he participated in Surfers Healing when he was 3. My oldest, who was 5 at the time, has over-the-top ADHD and participated as well. Last year, both of my boys did WRV’s Surf Camp and rocked it. This year, I wanted to find a camp who would take on multiple kids on the spectrum.
I created a group a couple of years ago for parents with kids on the Autism Spectrum. It’s a huge support system and we have about 260 members now. All online. I wanted to get the kids together “in real life.” So, my husband and I hosted a Christmas Party with Santa at our house and a Easter Egg Hunt with the Easter Bunny, again at our house. I wanted to venture outside my home and find someone who would work with our kids and teach them to surf.
So far we have had 3 day camps and now we are doing a 4 day long surf camp Aug13-16 at Croatan Beach, VA. Seth Broudy School of Surf has really stepped up to take us on. He is fantastic! He has hired 2 instructors who have some training in Autism and has volunteers who are special ed teacher and surf!”
This is not a Surfer’s Healing Event.
