Sunset Beach, Oahu, HAWAII (November 6, 2000) The large surf that cut yesterday’s competition 45 minutes short mellowed overnight and handedsurfers perfect 8′-10′ plus surf throughout the day.
Day 2 in the Rusty/XCEL Pro featured the balance of Round 1 and into heat 11of the 2nd Round in the main event.
World Champion Sunny Garcia couldn’t stay away fromthe excitement today. Although leery about a problemknee he chose to surf. “I injured my knee in a dirt bike accident afterBrazil and I felt a little strange, Sunset can be tough. I just want toenjoy the contest and not worry about getting hurt. I love to compete.”Sunny paddled out amidst a roar of applausesnapped some tight top turns and easily advanced.
Also advancing was 1998 winner Pancho Sullivan who was surprised he made it.”I thought I lost, it was so shifty out there, it was shocking, I justdidn’thave the rhythm. I squeaked through one ride as I was just looking for a(high) score”.
Upsets include four time Rusty/Xcel Champion Michael Hoand defending champion Bruce Irons. HPAC’s second ranked Braden Dias alsocame up short. Please see attached documents for full results.
