Tony Hawk will be the first recipient of the Action Sports Achievement Awards at the inaugural ESPN Action Sports and Music Awards, to be held Saturday, April 7 at the Universal Amphitheatre in Los Angeles, Calif., it was announced today by Ron Semiao, ESPN vice president, programming and managing director, Global X.
“Tony’s achievements within the sport of skateboarding have been welldocumented over the years; however, Tony Hawk will be receiving this awardnot just for raising the awareness and respect of skateboarding, but forthe attention and legitimacy he has brought to the action sports genre,”said Ian Votteri, assistant director of marketing and communications, ESPNAction Sports and Music Awards.
Tony’s achievements in skateboarding and action sports over the last twodecades are unparalleled. After turning professional at the age of 14,Hawk was ranked first overall in the National Skateboard AssociationSeries from 1983-1993. He has captured seven X Games gold medals andinvented more than 80 tricks, including the first completed 900. Hawk isthe founder and owner of Birdhouse Skateboards and proud husband andfather of two, soon to be three.
“It is an honor to be chosen for the Action Sports Achievement Award inone of the first awards presentation of this kind,” said Hawk. “Thanks toESPN for recognizing sports like skateboarding and giving us a legitimatevenue to show our talents. The ESPN Action Sports & Music Awards will be the first ever awards showto bring together the most recognizable action sports athletes and cuttingedge musical artists in the unique forum of an awards show. ESPN willunite athletes, sports legends, musicians and Hollywood celebrities topresent the most explosive evening in the history of action sports.Throughout the evening, awards will be presented to those who have shapedand continue to change the sports of the new millennium and in a uniquetwist, awards will also be presented to the musical artists that haveaccompanied these athletes every step of the way.

Male and Female Skier of the Year Motocross Rider ofthe YearSkiing’s Musical Artist of the Year Motocross MusicalArtist of the YearThe ESPN Action Sports and Music Awards will also present the ActionSports Artist Contribution Award and the Action Sports Feat of the YearAward.
