Koski and Pederzolli Win FIS HP Tignes

Tignes (France). With the season’s second Halfpipe contest the 2001/2002 Nokia Snowboard FIS World Cup at Tignes was concluded today. Markku Koski from Finland and Austrian rider Nicola Pederzolli claimed the wins.

The Halfpipe riders had to be pacient while waiting for their contest to happen. It has originally been scheduled to be held last Thursday (qualification) and Friday (final) but due to a mechanical failure of the Halfpipe grooming maching last week, the training had to be cancelled and the race jury decided, it was in the best interest of the competitors to delay the competition until today to allow the competitors more training in the pipe. They were proven right when the riders stated the pipe to be in a good shape today.

Koski Markku from Finland, ranked first also in the qualification, was going big already in the first run and took the lead. In the second he didn’t push hard anymore but claimed the win finally with his score from the first run. “I’m really happy,” he said. “In the morning I was kind of figuring out if I was riding or not – I hurt my knee yesterday – but then I decided to go for it and I did very good so it feels great. With the good result in the first run I was taking it easy in the second since I wanted to stay healthy. The pipe always got better and it was perfect for me.” He will have to go to the army now – they allowed him to delay this until after the competition.Iker Fernandez from Spain who had won the season opener at Valle Nevado, Chile, looked strong today and obviously enjoyed riding a lot. He has been in tenth place after the qualification but then pulled it together in the finals to finish second. His first run has put im in second position already but he was able to improve in the second run and just missed to take it away from Markku. “I really like this,” he said, “Marrku was riding very good so I’m glad to be second. I had some problems with the icy pipe in the morning today but then it went better in the finals and I had a lot fun riding it. There, I tried not to loose the speed and it turned out good. It was tough to hang around due to the problems with the machine and everyone got a bit sick of it but when we could start training and the weather was good so it was fun.” Risto Mattila has massed up his last trick in the first run but then improved in in the final and went third. “This was my third World Cup only,” he said, “so I’m very happy with the result. It was too bad that I landed my last trick in the flat in the first run but fortunately I kind of worked it out then in the second.”Fernandez is further leading the World Cup standings ahead of Koski and Swedish rider Markus Jonsson who didn’t make it to the finals today and finished 23rd.

Nicola Pederzolli from Austria was considered the number one contender for a win after she had been first in the qualification. In the finals she dominated the first run and finally claimed her first FIS World Cup win. “I was really stoked after I picked my tricks,” she said, “because I did a Fronside 540 and a McTwist which went pretty well in the training but it’s always a little different in the contest. I had a really good first run and that was the one that counted to win this competition – it’s just great. The pipe has been really nice, a little bit icy but the shape was perfect. I think everyone enjoyed riding here.” Pederzolli had not been at the start early last season and then couldn’t claim the necessary results to ensure a Halfpipe quota spot for Austria before the deadline on November 01st. France’s Doriane Vidal went second and seemed a bit upset: “I think my run was pretty good, I was very happy with it,” she said, “and I don’t think the difference in amplitude between Nicola and myself was judged the right way – I would have expected a better score for that.” French rider Cecile Alzina from Nice pulled third and was overwhelmed. “I’m super happy,” she said, “this was my first time in a World Cup final and I made it to the podium, together with Doriane – we are training together – that’s something special. They have done a good job with the pipe since it has not been so good in the beginning.”Pederzolli took the yellow World Cup leader bib from the Norwegian Stine Brun Kjeldaas who has not been at the start today and stepped back to second place – the Norwegians had decided to leave Tignes when the Halfpipe competition was delayed to Monday. Germany’s Nicola Thost, who had not entered the competition, is in third now.

The World Cup riders head on to Kaprun, Austria, now where the next races will be held on Friday (Parallel Slalom) and Saturday (Parallel Giant Slalom).
