McLEAN, Va – The SIA Board of Directors voted at its recent board meeting to offer a new category of membership to the winter sports industry; Retailer Membership.
“The retailer community has always played a specific role in SIA and now we are able to ‘officially’ include them in our vision of making North America the best snow sports market in the world,” said David Ingemie, president of SIA. This is an important step for SIA and winter sports. “We’re all part of one industry, and it’s the recognition of this new membership that opens up the cooperation to grow our sport even more.”
This new program is specifically designed for US and Canadian retailers to give shops what they need to help grow the winter sports market.- Increased exposure on SIA’s consumer site, Snowlink.com. This site has been awarded the 2001 IABC Inkwell Award for excellence and continues to be one of the most popular sites for winter sports.
– CD-Rom with ten professional photos to be used for promotional sales ads and marketing pieces. Photos are shot by acclaimed sports photographer, Lee Cohen, whose work has been featured in Freeze, Powder, Bike and many other publications.
– Member prices on SIA research publications; Retail Audit Top Line Report, Intelligence Report and Growing the Winter Sports Industry.
– Additional 2001 SnowSports Industry guides that lead you to direct contact information for everyone in the industry.

Retailers already are responding with great interest. Bob Olsen from Viking Ski Shop in Chicago states, “I hope becoming a member of SIA will offer more insight into the entire industry and things that affect the whole industry and not just my store individually. The door has been opened for a better flow of communication between retailers and SIA.”Alan Davis, owner of Princeton Sports & Travel in Maryland, says, “The importance of joining SIA, number one, is to get access to research on the snow sports industry and to be able to participate in programs already established such as the FedEx shipping programs and to be able to take advantage of the CD-Rom with professional family photos.” He added, “The resources SIA provides are incredible, and it will be worthwhile to partner with SIA and be on the inside versus being on the outside looking in.”
Retailer Membership will help support SIA’s Market Development programs; Donate-A-Ski/Donate-A-Board, WinterTrails, Take Your Daughter to the Snow Week and SnowTrax. These programs are designed to increase participation in snow sports. The Retailer Member program will officially be launched October 1, 2001.
