Members of the Surf Industry Manufacturers Association (SIMA) have elected their 2002-03 SIMA Board of Directors, which will again fall under the leadership of Dick Baker as president of the association. The new board was officially seated at the May 2002 Board of Directors meeting and features, for the first time in SIMA’s 12-year history, a board builder ÃÂ Bill Bahne of Bahne Surfboards/Fins Unlimited. New additions to the board line-up also include Jay Wilson, vice president of global marketing for Vans; Tom Brady, marketing director for OÃÂ¹Neill; and Jeff Booth, director of core sales for Quiksilver.
The 2002-03 SIMA Officers are President Dick Baker, CEO of Op; Vice President Paul Naude, CEO of Billabong USA; and Secretary/Treasurer Joel Cooper, CEO of Lost International. The 2002-03 Board of Directors are Fernando Aguerre, Chairman of Reef; Bill Bahne, president of Fins Unlimited; Jeff Booth of Quiksilver; Tom Brady of O’Neill; Dave Cunniff, president/owner of Custom X Bodyboards; Scott Daley, vice president of marketing for Body Glove; Gary Valentine, president of Globe Shoes and Jay Wilson of Vans.
“I’m honored to have been re-elected as president of SIMA and look forward to working with the impressive group of officers and board of directors that have also been elected to serve the needs of the membership,” said Baker. “Our goals for the next two years include continuing to grow the membership under the new dues-paying structure, implementing industry-wide research projects and building additional educational programs similar to SIMA Surf Summit. Ultimately, our goal is to uphold the purpose of SIMA, which is to help grow the industry by helping member companies grow their businesses. SIMA is definitely equipped to achieve this with the Board of Directors we now have in place.”
In addition to the Board of Directors, SIMA features a non-voting, non-elected Advisory Board that also serves the membership by offering guidance and advice to the Board of Directors. The following industry leaders have been appointed by the Board to serve on the Advisory Board: Wayne Bartholomew of ASP International, Liam Ferguson of Transworld Media, Alan Gibby of Dynocomm Sports, Dave Gilovich of Surfline, Joy Horwitz of Ezekiel, Dan McInerny of Hub360, Kevin Meehan of Surfer Magazine, Bob Mignogna of The Surfing Group, Guy Motil of Longboard Magazine, Steve Pezman of The SurferÃÂ¹s Journal and Leigh Tonai of Rip Curl.
The Surf Industry Manufacturers Association (SIMA) is the official working trade association of more than 700 surf industry suppliers. Founded in 1989, SIMA is a non-profit organization that serves to promote awareness of thesurf industry and participation in the sport of surfing through public relations efforts and a variety of services,educational programs and research. In addition, SIMA actively supports ocean environment efforts through its 501(c)(3) charitable environmental foundation, the SIMA Environmental Fund. In the past 12 years, the SIMA Environmental Fund has raised more than $1.75 million for environmental groups seeking to protect the world’s oceans, beaches and waves.
