Millionaire ‘Bucket List Family’ travels the world to give back

Garrett and Jessica Gee met in one of the most romantic places in the world: a flower market in Russia.

"One day, I was walking through a flower market when I crossed paths with Jessica and her friend," remembers Garrett, 25. "As service missionaries, we weren't allowed to date, or even hang out, or even admit that Jessica was beautiful, so that all had to wait until we finished our service and returned home."

Back home in Utah, the two began dating and married shortly after, giving birth to two children. Then, last year, Garrett sold his mobile scanning app to Snapchat for $54 million, and the duo faced another a serious decision: Settle down and grow up, or not?

They chose the latter.

Dubbing themselves the Bucket List Family, Garrett, Jessica, 29, and their children, Dorothy, 3, and Manilla, 1, drafted a plan to embark on a six-month adventure around the Pacific Ocean, plotting points in Australia, Indonesia, New Zealand and Thailand. The first step was selling off all of their belongings, save for some mementos and journals, in order to fund the trip.

"We didn't want to risk our savings or our family's future well being if things went terribly wrong," Garrett tells GrindTV. "So we've funded the entire trip from the sale of our cars, furniture and other belongings."

It's been four months so far. The family has bungee jumped off a bridge, sailed across French Polynesia and swum beside humpback whales in Tonga. Manilla communicated his first words in New Zealand. Dorothy learned to swim underwater in Hawaii.

But their around-the-world trip isn't just about racking up photos in far-off places. Together, Garrett and Jessica came up with seven family goals that included becoming a stronger family unit, learning how to live with less and living a more compassionate life.

After the holidays, the family told People magazine that they will be giving five deserving people LASIK surgery; since announcing their plan, more than 200 names and stories have been submitted. And though the Bucket List Family has helped someone anonymously every month since gifting a free trip to Disneyland last year to a family who had fallen on hard times, the Gees prefer not to share the specifics of these stories.

While the family's Instagram feed looks like a dream, Garrett is the first to admit it's not always easy. Traveling with small children means planning for safety and emergency situations, avoiding sketchy areas or rumors of civil unrest.

"Travel days are the toughest," he laughs. "Outside of safety, planning to travel with kids for us just means we can't get on a plane without the iPads being fully charged with games and movies ready and their fanny packs full of snacks and juice boxes."

The Gee's six-month adventure is quickly evolving into an indefinitely long journey, but eventually, they do plan to settle down — maybe.

"Both Jessica and I grew up in steady permanent homes and we loved it," says Garrett. "We loved the consistency of friends, school, sports teams, and we'd love to provide the same for our children. But plans might change. We set out on this adventure promising ourselves to try and be open minded to whatever else might be out there, so we will see.

"So far, we are [four] months into a very non-consistent, unstable lifestyle, and we love it!"
