In February, the action sports community mourned the loss of one of its most transcendent figures when BMX legend Dave Mirra committed suicide. Now, as reported by RIDE BMX, the X Games will honor one of their greatest athletes ever by hosting a new event in his name at the 2016 Austin X Games.

According to a press release from ESPN, X Games will be adding the Dave Mirra BMX Park Best Trick competition to X Games Austin to pay homage to the legacy of the 24-time X Games medalist. The event will take place on Saturday, June 4 immediately after the traditional BMX Park event, and the winner will be presented with the Mirra Golden Pedal as well as prize money.

“Dave Mirra is basically BMX, and his name is synonymous with BMX in the modern age, you know, the household name,” 16-time X Games BMX medalist Ryan Nyquist said about ESPN’s decision to honor Mirra’s legacy.

“I think it's great that X Games will honor Dave and his accomplishments with a BMX Park Best Trick contest. Dave was always one to push the limits of what's possible on a bike, and to innovate his riding beyond what we all thought was possible. Giving the riders a stage to push their riding and the progression of the sport in the name of Dave Mirra is perfect.”
