‘World of Adventure’ goes on the Extreme Sailing Series in Madeira

The Extreme Sailing Series started in 2007 and is the original Stadium Racing sailing circuit. Showcasing the top athletes maneuvering hydro-foiling GC32 catamarans on short, inshore courses, it is one of the ultimate tests of a sailing crew.

This week, “World of Adventure” follows the third act of the 2017 Extreme Sailing Series on the Portuguese island of Madeira. Eight international teams battle it out at speeds reaching 39 knots in one of the most competitive sailing races around.

Extreme Sailing Series race director John Craig says, “What we’ve seen is the physicality of the boats has changed. As a result, the athletic ability and age of some of the sailors at the elite level has actually come down in age.”

The Danish-flagged SAP Extreme Sailing Team eventually guts out the win against elite competition. Helmsman Adam Minoprio said of being on Madeira, “It’s been very beautiful here on the island of Madeira, but very tricky sailing conditions. But it’s the same wind for everyone out there, so it’s been very testing.”
