Finding the right swim trunks is a tough thing to nail down. Which is odd, because there are so many companies that make them; so many styles to choose from; so many different types of materials.

Bottom line is that given the plethora of selection, there’s virtually a swim trunk out there for every size/shape/style/personality, which is why decisions can be difficult to make.

And, now that the summer weather is in full-swing, it’s the time of year for me to get into my annual search. It’s a search for the perfect summertime trunks.

A pair of trunks usually only last me one summer before getting too faded, too crusty and too “so yesterday,” so it’s important that I make the most of them while I have them.

And my style tends to shift from year to year. I don’t really categorize my style in any certain way, just what I feel good wearing on any given day. But quality and durability are huge for me. I also typically like the shorter lengths when it comes to trunks (sorry, 1999 version of me … no more cargo shants). I usually prefer an 18-inch inseam.

All that being said, I’d like to introduce the Aloha Sunday Kai Swim Shorts ($110).

When it comes to swim trunks, Aloha Sunday knows what’s up. It’s tough to describe, but just holding the trunks in my hands I can feel a difference set apart from all the others. Built well. However, at first, a 16-inch inseam seemed a bit too short for my current taste. But hey, I’m always up to try something new. So I did.

I must admit, the shorter length grew on me much quicker than I expected — almost instantly — and I liked the way they looked. Made from mid-weight matte microfiber, they feel soft and comfy without compromising quality. And while Aloha Sunday doesn’t explicitly market these shorts as “hybrid trunks,” I’d certainly vouch for their versatility in and out of the water.

These shorts are solid enough to wear around town with their zip-fly two-button closure, and the side pockets feel like any other casual short I’ve owned. Enough room for your phone, wallet, keys, or even a bar of surf wax.

“Our swim shorts have a tailored look and comfortable fit, zip fly with two button closure, side pocket entry with mesh pocket bags, right front I.D. pocket, and 16-inch Length. These fit true to size,” says Aloha Sunday.

Looks like I’m good to go for summertime. I’m a big fan of the Kai.

BONUS: 9.5-inch DOPP KIT – NAVY TROPICAL ($35)

This is just so awesome, I had to mention it. This bag can be used for just about anything, but I call it my “surf paraphernalia bag” (perfect for surf wax,wax comb, sun block, leash string, other miscellaneous small surf-related items that you’d like to keep organized).

It’s also perfect for your toiletries when you travel, maybe a small camera, or even a few extra pairs of sunglasses. It’s soft. It’s solid. It’s look rad. This bag is just really cool.
