‘Beyond the Drop’ shows kayaking isn’t just about running waterfalls

"Beyond the Drop" has spectacular waterfalls, as one might expect in a kayak video with that title. But aside from the action and beauty of the Rio Tulija, aka Agua Azul, it also features an underlying story, a poignant tale of why kayakers do what they do.

Six professional kayakers explore the blue waters of Agua Azul and its five waterfalls in the rainforests of Southern Mexico. They meet the people of the region and soak up the local culture.

"There's an old saying that says the journey is as important as the destination," the narrator says. "It's cliché, it's overused, and it's very true. For us as kayakers, it's not just the waterfall—it's the whole river, the rapids we run, the people we meet along the way, the friends we share our journey with. For me, that's where I belong, that's where I want to be, that's where I'm always trying to get back to."

Watch as Rafa Ortiz, Rush Sturges, Evan Garcia, Aniol Serraasolses, Martina Wegman, and Casper Van Kalmthout tell a kayaking story, one worth its 7-minute length:
