A dramatic scene in which a small dog was swept off a rocky cliff on Oahu - only to be rescued eventually by its owner - has been captured on video via aerial camera.
This occurred in Hawaii Kai at remote China Walls, a spot popular among swimmers who leap from the cliff and, when swells are large, slosh around in waves that surge against and along the cliff face.
The accompanying footage, captured by drone pilot Donnie Klotz, shows the dog on a ledge partly down the cliff as the large wave approaches and sweeps the pooch into Maunalua Bay.
Klotz told Hawaii News Now: “The dog was on the ledge because he followed the owner down. The owner jumped off the ledge at China Walls. The dog went down one level and was just, you know, looking for his owner.
“So then the wave came... the owner didn’t even see the dog getting washed off."
There are no lifeguards at China Walls, but signs warn of the danger associated with standing too close to the clIff's edge.
Yet thrill seekers routinely leap from various ledges on the cliff.
Understandably, people viewing the Hawaii News Facebook post were critical of the dog owner, who is said to be the man rescuing the dog in the Hawaii News video report.
Reads one comment, from a woman named Lily: “Only a complete idiot would allow their dog to even be here. Thank goodness for happy endings.”
