Updated at 2:37pm. Above: Photos from Santa Cruz which, unlike most of SoCal, got hit by the tsunami this morning. TransWorld SURF photographer Dave Nelson called it, “Full on pandemonium,” as boats capsized and were swept down the harbor colliding with anything in their path.

A massive 8.9 earthquake struck northern Japan and caused a massive tsunami (some reports are saying 23-feet) killing hundreds in northeastern Japan. Hawaii was hit by a 3-foot tsunami surf early this morning but there was limited damage and no casualties. The West Coast is under alert and a surge is expected to hit sometime around 11am. Our thoughts and prayers go out to our friends in Japan. Stay tuned for more as the story develops.
