Andy Irons Wins 2005 Rip Curl Pro Pipeline Masters And 2005 Vans Triple Crown

Saturday, December 17

Pipeline, North Shore Oahu

Big congratulations go out to Kauais Andy Irons. Andy just won his third Pipe Masters and yet another Vans Triple Crown. After taking out his younger brother, Bruce, an in-form Mick White Lightning Fanning, and Rip Curl Code STL Trialist and North Shore local boy Kalani Chapman, AI dedicated his win to his fallen friend, Malik Joyeux, who dies while surfing Pipeline nearly two weeks ago.

First off, I want to dedicate this to Malik. Id also like to thanks all my friends, family, and the crowd for coming down here. I also want to congratulate Kelly on his seventh world title. Thanks to my beautiful girlfriend Lyndie, Kai (Garcia), Kala (Alexander), the Wolfpak, and everyone, you guys are my best friends and I couldnt have done it without you guys! The three-time World Champ was literally jumping up and down and looked like he had just won the lottery.

$40,000 (30gs for the Pipe Masters and 10gs for the Triple Crown) will do that for a young man.

While Andy was the big winner of the day, other highlights were Luke Egan, and six-time Tripler Crown champion Sunny Garcia calling it a career. Sunny retires as the man who won more professional events in Hawaii than anyone, ever. Luke Egan retires as the ultimate mix of power and style. Thanks to both Egan and Sunny for their years of fantastic surfing, were gonna miss you guys!

Besides Andy, the biggest story of the day was local surfer Kalani Chapman and his amazing performance. Kalani surfed all the way through the Rip Curl Code STL Trials, beat Kelly Slater two out of four times, and ended up in fourth place. Chapman took home a check for $9,000, took down some heavy hitters, and more importantly, pleased his mother. I used to come down here to find him and hed run out into the water and hide from me when he was 12! said a beaming Mrs. Chapman. Kalani, who had major backing from the crowd–including big bro Shawn Briley–was stoked, too: Its like a dream, its just too much for words said the humble goofyfoot.
