Aussie Whiz Kid And Rip Curl Rider Owen Wright Wins Inaugural Hobgood Challenge Presented By Pac Sun

In Micronesian conditions claimed by former ASP World Champion, CJ Hobgood, as “the best righthand waves I’ve seen in my 27 years on the planet, 17 year-old reigning ISA World Junior Champ and Rip Curl representer, Owen Wright, beat out a stacked international field to claim victory at the Inaugural Hobgood Challenge presented by Pac Sun.

For the lanky yet gifted Wright, this victory comes as no surprise to those familiar with the status of this rising superstar from Culburra Beach, NSW Australia. Owen has quickly created a buzz about himself, taking home the International Rip Curl GromSearch Title last April, just months before winning the Under 16 ISA World Junior Title in Brazil. When asked about the conditions for the event, Owen sheepishly suggests it was “the best contest waves ever!

The concept of this ASP sanctioned event, developed by current WCT top shelf pros, Damien and CJ Hobgood, was to invite 6 of the globe’s hottest under 21 year-old surfers, throw them in some of the planet’s best waves, under a unique format, and see what happens.

Invited surfers include fellow Rip Curl rider Garut Widiartha (Indo), Dusty Payne (HI), Dion Atkinson (Aus), Clay Marzo (HI), Eric Geiselman (USA), and fellow Rip Curl rider Garut Widiartha (Indo).

Pac Sun will be bringing video highlights of this historic event to the world through a series of ‘webisodes’ set to begin airing on March 1 at
