Beating summertime surf blues in Los Angeles

Everyone loves summertime, with its hot weather and girls in bikinis, but if you’re a surfer in Los Angeles’ South Bay, like local pro Matt Pagan, filmed below, the summer season means a flat ocean, beach volleyball, day drinking, and lots of driving to find waves.

Thanks to Palos Verdes, a beautiful and jealously guarded jewel of rolling hills and reef coves that jut into the Pacific, separating Los Angeles and Orange counties, the south swell is blocked from reaching the bay’s shores, leaving Malibu as the only surf option in Los Angeles this time of year.

In the video below, Pagan opts to head south to the backside of Palos Verdes for some beachbreak peaks, framed by the chaotic Long Beach backdrop.
