Round 2 of the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast got under way yesterday in 2 to 4 foot surf at Snapper Rocks. Names like Irons, Reynolds and Smith all had heats. First up, Andy Irons, who scored the highest single wave score (9.7) of the event, and in the process took out Kommunity Project Trials winner, Tamaroa McComb.

?I haven?t got a 9.00 in about six months so it felt unreal,? said Irons. ?I haven?t made heats in a while and I guess I just haven?t been into it. In the off season I really had to think about that and now I?m really psyched. I want to be here and I want to do well. I like to win heats and it feels good, it?s my new buzz.?

In a bit of an upset wildcard, Julian Wilson, took out Hawaiian heavy weight, Panch Sullivan. Although, if you have seen any of the recent footage of Wilson, you’ll prabably understand why this may have only been an upset on paper. Wilson rode his pink board, which he is doing so to raise Breast Cancer awareness, into Round 3 where he will face none other than Reigning ASP World Champion, Mick Fanning.

?It?s going to be very tough, he?s pretty much on fire as everyone has seen,? said Wilson. ?But I want to do better than I did last year. I have nothing to lose and to get the experience and surf Snapper with one other guy out is great.?

Tour rookies and media magnets, Dane Reynolds and Jordy Smith, both put on on impressive performances and will find themselves in Round 3. Others that advanced include: C.J. Hobgood, Roy Powers, Ben Bourgeois, Timmy Reyes, Tom Whitaker and Jay Thompson.
