Book Review: Last Wave by Paul Hayden

Last Wave

By Paul Hayden

MTV Books/Pocket Books

Last Wave has all the elements needed for a successful MTV publication: sex, booze, tears, and teen angst–I couldn't put it down.

It's nearly impossible not to get caught up in the drama of seventeen-year-old Matt Owen's complicated life (and I dare anyone to try). The captain of the water-polo team has stolen his dream girl, who is also the little sister of his best mate who knocked up some floozy and can no longer meet him for the morning sesh. On top of all this, the impending surgery needed for his arthritic feet serves as a constant reminder that he may never surf again.

Complete with Aussie slang and plenty of “youthful” language, Paul Hayden's first novel models a classic coming-of-age story with a sharp modern edge. Highly recommended for teenagers and their parents.–D.S.
