As good as the waves are, Puerto Rico’s surfers seem to be neglected due to their position on the planet. So when we hear of really good kids like Brian Toth, we want to give them due justice with some coverage. Brian’s a cool-ass kid¿check him out.¿A.C.
TWS: What’s surfing in Puerto Rico like?
Brian Toth: It’s pretty much the same, but the water temperature has changed a lot and stuff¿it’s fun, though.
Where have you traveled travel to?
I’ve traveled to a lot of places. I’ve been to Hawai’i, Portugal, Costa Rica, California, Florida, Barbados, Tortola¿that’s all I can think of right now.
What are your plans for this year?
I’m not sure.
You don’t know where you’re going until it happens?
I’m going to Indonesia for summer, and I may go to Puerto Escondido for spring break, and then I’m doing the Easterns in April in Florida. Then maybe I’ll go to Brazil in June for the Pan-Am games.
There’re a lot of stories about Puerto Rico being hardcore. Is it really that way?
I don’t know, it depends on the people. I guess it’s hardcore¿there’re a lot of beaches that are hardcore here.
Who are some of the Puerto Rican guys you look up to?
What do you think about him winning at Pipe?
So stoked. Everybody knew about it. The word just spread¿everybody was so stoked down here. It was awesome.
Are there a lot of good surfers in Puerto Rico?
Who are some guys everybody should be looking for?
What about young guys your age?
Dylan Graves, Gabby Escudero, and my brother Wesley¿he’s been improving. He’s been winning a lot, too.
Are you trying to have your brother follow in your footsteps?
Yeah, he started out as a sponger. I got him on a board in Costa Rica, and ever since then he’s been liking it and surfing really good.
