Hailing from the same waters as the great Gary “Kong” Elkerton and Sunset Beach charger Zane Harrison, Leigh (pronounced “Lee”) Sedley has become one of Australia’s latest in a long line of future WCT contenders.
Sedley, who taught himself to surf at the age of eight, won the ASP Pro Junior series last year in Australia, and as a result has three seeds waiting for him this year in major WQS events. His goal is to qualify for the WCT through the WQS, and with these seeds, he’s got a head start on the competition.
Not only a contest surfer, Sedley had a breakout performance this past season on the North Shore. After showing up without a major sponsor and no place to stay, Sedley hooked up with Chas Chidester, whose family lives near Rocky Point, and cruised with Chas and friends, surfing Sunset, Rockies, Backdoor, Pipe, and Hale’iwa.
Also, look for Leigh in the trials of the Quiksilver Pro at Snapper Rocks in March-he’s got a seed for that event as well, in which the winner joins the likes of Andy and Kelly in the ‘CT event and gets a shot at the big time.-Justin Cotà‡
