Over the past four years, I’ve had the opportunity to spend some time surfing and traveling the East Coast with Mike Guarino and have been quite impressed with his skills, aptitude, and personality in and out of the water. He’s a secretly innovative surfer and just loves the whole life surfing has to offer-the traveling, friendships, and freedom.
You might’ve recently spotted the East Coast cover shot of Mike standing in a gaping New Jersey barrel. He’s been turning heads more and more in the past few years while earning a nice amount of media coverage in the East Coast surf mags-making him one of the most talked about up-and-comers in the Northeast. He spends most of his time surfing or skateboarding when the surf is invisible. On the East Coast Volcom tour last year, I witnessed him dropping off a U-Haul on his skate, doing ollies over a few huge gaps with Ozzie Wright, and skating down a huge yellow slide at some small carnival we were parked next to. He seems to just look for ways to innovate a little. He made the same impression on the few days we had surf with some big airs.
“Mikey ‘Fart Grom’ Guarino has talents that might surpass his surfing,” says Volcom Team Manager Brad Dougherty. “He can suck air and fart at will, for just about any length of time. I think he should be on Letterman and move to Hollywood.”
Although he always has gas, Mike is graduating from gromhood and adding a big piece to the new Northeast surf movement. We’ll be seeing more of Guarino in the years ahead.-Sean Slater
