HONOLULU – Thurs., Oct. 29, 2009 — Hawaii’s Coco Ho, hot off an ASP Dream Tour win in Portugal overnight, has shot to third in the world and is in the running for the 2009 ASP women’s world title, to be decided here at the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, presented by Rockstar Energy Drink, Nov. 12-Dec. 20. It’s a teenage surfer’s dream to see the world title come down in their own backyard, let alone be the one in contention.

At just 18 years of age, Coco will be the youngest world surfing champion in history—male or female—if she wins the world title. She would also be the first women’s world surfing champion from Hawaii in almost 30 years (the last was Margo Oberg, 1981), and she would be the first surfer to win both the ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) and Dream Tour world titles in the same year, having already sealed the WQS crown for 2009.

It was during the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing last winter that Coco, just 17 at the time, scraped in as the last qualifier for the Dream Tour. Now, having wasted no time in taking down the world’s best, Coco is the latest torchbearer of the Ho surfing dynasty and is probably better equipped than every other surfer on tour to make it all happen at home on the North Shore.

Born and raised here under the wing of surfing royalty—her father Michael Ho and uncle Derek Ho—Coco has been preparing for this moment her whole life. Her dad and uncle share six Vans Triple Crown titles between them, encompassing four World Cup of Surfing titles at Sunset Beach, and three Pipeline Masters titles. Uncle Derek was also the 1993 ASP world champion.

Coco will be competing in all three of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing women’s events that carry a $10,000 bonus for the best overall performer:

The Vans Hawaiian Pro, Haleiwa, Nov. 12-23
The Gidget Pro Sunset Beach, Nov. 24-Dec.6
The Billabong Pro Maui, Dec. 8-20.
