ASP PRIME O'Neill Cold Water Classic Begins Today

SANTA CRUZ, California/USA (Tuesday, October 25, 2011) – The 2011 ASP PRIME O'Neill Cold Water Classic California is set to host a mass of the world's best surfers at the iconic righthand pointbreak of Steamer Lane with the waiting period beginning October 26.

In addition to the crucial points on offer towards the men's ASP World Ranking, the O'Neill Cold Water Classic California is the final stop on the O'Neill CWC Series, which offers an additional prize purse to the top finisher.

Julian Wilson (AUS), 22, current ASP World Tour Rookie, has been building momentum over the course of the season and the progressive natural-footer is one elite ASP Top 34 member who is looking to capitalize on the top-level competition at this year's O'Neill Cold Water Classic California to keep his skills sharp between ASP World Title events.

"We’ve been on a long, constant leg this last couple of months and I have been making some heats," Wilson said. "I’m looking forward to staying in a jersey for the time between Portugal and San Francisco!"

In addition to the competitive side of the O'Neill CWC California, Wilson is looking to enjoy all that Santa Cruz has to offer during the event.

"I had a great time up there last year at this event," Wilson said. "I’m hoping to go a little further this time around and looking forward to hanging out in Santa Cruz again. I’ve got some good friends up there and like to play some of the golf courses and eat at the restaurants. The wave is so fun and I love how the spectators can be right on top of you, it creates a cool stadium feel."

Tanner Gudauskas (San Clemente, CA), 23, is one California goofy-footer who is fired up to battle it out at Steamer Lane while taking part in the wave's rich history.

"The lane is a beautiful place," Gudauskas said. "It's a great contest venue that I think a lot of the surfers look forward to it every year, myself included. I love getting to put on a little more wetsuit and having a go at some backhand bangers. The local guys who surf out there are some of the best. Just look at Nat, he has gotten to watch Ruffo, the Smith brothers, Randy Bonds, Rat, and a lot more. He is the next generation of tearing the bag out of the Lane. I love surfing it!"

Gudauskas, who has recently finished runner-up at an ASP 6-Star in Brazil, is currently sitting at No. 39 on the men's ASP World Ranking and knows a big result at the O'Neill Cold Water Classic could secure his position back among the ASP Top 34.

"Yeah it's all good motivation," Gudauskas said. "My year has had a lot of learning involved so I am excited to be in the position I am in. The PRIME contest are where the ground is really made up so it's awesome to have that chance. Motivation to be on the World Tour isn’t too hard to find!"

Event organizers at the O'Neill Cold Water Classic California will meet tomorrow morning at 7am local time for a possible 7:30am start.
