[IMAGE 1]Ventura’s Cory Arrambide, age 12, has achieved a record that most insiders thought would never be broken. Cory won his 21st NSSA event. The once thought unbreakable record of 20 wins was previously held by NSSA stand out Michael Taras. In order for Cory to have a chance of 21 wins he had to surf several different divisions and drive up and down the coast to accomplish this task.
Cory’s new record is icing on the cake considering his impressive list of accomplishments this year including the 2002 NSSA Sportsmanship Award, a streak of 12 consecutive event wins, the 2002 NSSA Gold Coast Explorer Menehunes Champion, and the 2002 NSSA Southwest Open Boys Champion. With one event remaining in the Southwest Explorer season, Cory can push the record to 22 victories with a win.
Cory’s 21st win occurred at Huntington Beach in 2′-3′ occasional 4′ sets in windy and choppy trying conditions. Arrambide battled through three rounds of competition en-route to the final. In the final he dominated the pack with posting a score of 24 points out of 30.
Along the way of his remarkable season Cory picked up a couple accomplishments:
* Gold Coast Explorer Menehuenes Champion 2002.
* Went undefeated in the Gold Coast Menehuene division, 1 of 8 Surfer’s that has accomplished this feat.
* Won 12 consecutive contests.
* South West Open Boys Champion 2002.
* Won Sportsmanship award 2002.
“Cory is a great kid,” says Rip Curl Amateur team manager Mike Makos. “He has had a amazing season and he keeps things in perspective. As evidenced by Cory winning the Sportsman ship award. His family really supports him and I’m looking forward to watching his future accomplishments”.
After winning the event Cory stated, “I’m stoked that I did it and now with one more event I can go out and have fun.” With Cory’s competitive fire there is no doubt that evey time he puts on a jersey he will be a forced to be reckon with for many years to come.
Cory is currently sponsored by: Rip Curl USA, Spy Optics, Creatures of Leisure, Roberts Surfboards, Globe shoes, Sex Wax, Hansen’s energy drinks, and Ventura Surf Shop.
“Cory was a new addition to the Globe Team at the beginning of the NSSA season,” says Brian Robbins, Surf Marketing Manager for Globe International. “It was such a good thing when Cory had won the first couple contests. I thought I’d found a needle in a haystack, but had no idea what he was actually about to accomplish. I witnessed a lot of his competitions this season. His ability to focus on winning week after week is something that a lot of kids his age don’t have. Cory is a great surfer, has solid family support and is a really good kid. We look forward to his future with Globe.”
