Cory Lopez Wins Inaugural Globe Pro At Sebastian Inlet.

El Segundo, CA. January 6, 2005 –Cory Lopez won first place at the Globe Sebastian Inlet Pro taking home $7,000 and a 2005 Sea-Doo GTX.

After fourteen years without a major professional surfing event, the Globe Sebastian Inlet Pro took over the Sebastian Inlet in Florida this past week. Kicking off the WQS season, the event brought forth a slew of competitors including WCT professional surfers Kelly Slater, Damien Hobgood, Tim Curran, and Cory Lopez. Additional competitors included 3x World Champion Tom Curren, Ben Bourgeois, Globe Team Riders Jeremy Johnston, Kyle Garson, Jason Shibata, and Peter Mendia.

The earlier part of the day presented 3-4 ft waves with classic Sebastian Inlet conditions. A victorious Cory Lopez won the first place spot with Kelly Slater not far behind in second. Slater also scored the highest wave of the event with a 9.6, taking home a brand new Harmon Ovation Ocean Acoustics guitar. Aaron Cormican came in at third, and Ben Bourgeois secured fourth place.

The Globe Sebastian Inlet Pro also held the first ever RB 5X Tow-At, sponsored by Red Bull. Challenging bumpy conditions proved tough, but the event prevailed with successful airs, gouging turns, and a new competition format. With what seemed like effortless skill, Ben Bourgeois won the contest.

“Doing this event has been such a great experience for Globe. To be able to bring professional surfing, at such a high level, back to the Inlet is something we couldn’t be happier about. Thanks to all who came and supported the event, and congrats to the finalists. It was an amazing event and couldn’t have happened without you, said Brian Robbins, Globe Surf Marketing Manager.

The Globe Sebastian Inlet Pro brought more than just the world’s best professional surfers to the event. Record breaking numbers of fans and crowds came out for the event. On Sunday January 2, the Sebastian Inlet State Park recorded over 3000 paid cars enter the park, and week long crowds were estimated at 15,000. City officials estimated $1.3 million dollars would be generated by local businesses associated with the surfers and visitors of the event. Following the devastating results of last September’s hurricanes, the surfing brought much needed revenue and a restored excitement to the town.
