Creatures Of Leisure January Team Letter 2005

Firstly, a belated Happy New Year and Christmas to everyone! 2005 has kicked off and our junior team riders are already straight into it, currently competing in the Pro Junior at Bells and also the recently completed World Junior Championships in North Narrabeen, where Adam Melling flew the flag for the Aussie Team. Adam won the final Pro Junior Event at Bells last year to qualify for the 6 man Aussie Team competing at the World Juniors and was unlucky to be knocked in the fourth round. Adam also further enhanced his reputation with a strong showing in Hawaii with people making the call he was the ‘Fanning Replacement’.

Speaking of Mick Fanning, Mick is back in the water again feeling fit and psyched to go for 2005. Mick suffered a heavy leg injury while freesurfing midway through the year forcing him to miss the majority of last years WCT events. Mick has been awarded a 2005 injury wildcard and will back on tour full time this year. Mick will be the guy to watch at his local break when the first CT for 05 kicks off in March.

We are continuing to solidify our International Surf Team with the recent double signings of US based superstars Chris Ward and Timmy Reyes. The signings coincide with both surfers qualifying for the 2005 WCT. Chris Ward’s maiden year on the CT is one of the most eagerly anticipated. Wardo has been blowing minds for years free surfing and is now focused on his competitive surfing career. Timmy Reyes will be carrying the hopes and aspirations of the Huntington Beach faithful. Born and rasied in Surf City, Timmy was always destined for the big stage and now has the opportunity to showcase his talent as one of his countries hottest surfers. June 2005 will see the worldwide release of Timmy Reyes and Chris Ward signature model tailpads. Wardo and Timmy’s signing closely follows the major signing of Rob Machado, who also has a new signature model pad out now, to the Creatures Team.

Retiring from full time competition on this years WCT is another US based pro Pat O’Connell. After bursting on the world surfing stage with his starring role in The Endless Summer 2, Pat has spent a decade traveling the globe surfing on the CT. This will allow Pat more time to free surf, travel on photo trips and spend time with his partner. Enjoy Pat!

Munduka saw Luke Egan rack up his best result for the 04 season with a victory at the Billabong Pro. Luke tore apart the 4-5 foot reeling lefts on offer even with persisting rain and wind affected conditions at Mundaka to record his fourth career WCT win. Parko finished 3rd in the event and Taj Burrow claimed 5th.

November saw Taj Burrow continue his amazing run in Brasil taking out the Nova Schin Festival in Praia Da Vila in 2-3 foot beachbreaks. The win was Taj’s best result for 04 and is the third time he has won the CT event in Brasil, having claimed previous wins in 2002 and 1999. TB nailed some huge air reverses and punts to take the win where Andy Irons claimed his third consecutive world title. Taj dedicated his win to his best friend, world renowned photog Kevin ‘Twiggy’ Sharland, who sadly passed away in October. Twiggy was a great friend to all at Creatures and in the worldwide surfing community and will be sadly missed. RIP

Chelsea Georgeson and Claire Bevilacqua will be flying the flag on the Womens WCT in 05. Chelsea finished with a 3rd place at the final event for 04 in Hawaii and finished 3rd overall for the year on the CT ratings and was placed 1st on the QS. Claire Bevilacqua will start her maiden year on the Womens CT after finishing 6th on the final 2004 WQS Ratings.

Also joining the Mens WCT big league for 2005 will be Kirk Flintoff. Kirk finished 15th on the WQS for 2004.

Congrats to Paul Paterson and family on the birth of their first son, George Mark Paterson. Look out for this kid in the surf in years to come. Well Done Antman!

Taj Burrow’s new surf film, ‘Fair Bits’, has been screening to rave reviews all around Australia as part of the Jack McCoy Film Festival. TB is leading the revolution of new surf films with this latest release. The chopper footage of Supers is amazing. Check it out! Also check Jay Davies section in the new Rusty offering, ‘No Way Man’.

Taj has recently added to his property portfolio with the purchase of a new pad on the hill at Yallingup. Taj now has the best view of Rabbits when it’s on and the most amazing views of the coast. Not to be outdone, Jake Paterson has recently moved into his newly built Yallingup hill home, just up the road from TB. It’s a hard life for Jake and his family when Snake’s checking the surf from his second story pool beer in hand. It’s a crafty bit of architecture.

Creatures US Brand Manager, Damon George, has just signed up US supergroms Clay Marzo and Cory Arrambide to the team. These kids are the next breed of talent coming out of the states and will be leading the charge coming from the US. Listen out for more on these two.

Creatures Junior Team was well represented at the recent Australian National Titles held at Phillip Island in Victoria. Despite the cold conditions Jay Davies, Dan Waddell, Julian Wilson, Dean Iezzi, Kyle Gilbert, Kirra Young and Stephanie Gilmore all ripped in the chilly conditions. Congratulations to Steph Gilmore on her win claiming herself the Aussie Title and racking up the only 10 point score on her way to victory.

Josh Rush had a busy time towards the end of 04, getting all the best waves on offer in Vico, then taking on the Mystery Flight with ASL on the ‘Wheel of Fortune’. Josh ended up in Tassie and after a bit of an adventure scored some fun waves. Josh also scored some heavy bombs on another recent trip to Tas at Shipsterns.
