Day Three Results From The Mr. Price Pro In South Africa

Great waves for third day of Mr Price Pro

Well shaped head high waves peeling right across North Beach and fanned by a fresh SW offshore breeze are providing the surfers still in contention for the Mr Price Pro titles with the ideal canvas on which to perform their artistry.

The third day of the ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) event for men and women kicked off with the remaining 10 heats of men’s round four, the round of 128, and continues with the eight heats of the women’s last 32 before concluding with nine heats of men’s round five.

Simon Nicholson, local WQS campaigner and 2000 US Pro tour champion took full advantage of the conditions at his home break to record the highest two-wave heat tally of the event to date when he earned an outstanding 17.83 points out of a possible 20 in his first heat in this year’s event.

The 22 year-old Durbanite went ballistic, ripping every wave that came his way to notch up counting rides of 9.0 and 8.83 points, with two more of 7.0 and 6.67 that would have been enough to take him to victory in nearly half the heats in the round.

Aussies Matt Bemrose and Shannon Pollard also put on red hot performances with tallies of over 16 points while South Africans Shane Warren (Bluff) and Royden Bryson (EL), Americans Che Stang and Dean Randazzo, Hawaiians Roy Powers and Sean Moody and Japanese Naohisa Ogawa and Norimasa Ohno kept their challenge for the title, ratings points and R100 000 first place prize-money on track by advancing to round five.

The top 15 seeds in the women’s event, and wildcard Sacha Moller, take to the surf for the first time today with current world #1 Melanie Redman-Carr (Aus) the one to watch. She will face tough opposition from the likes of defending champion Jacqueline Silva (Brazil), SA’s queen of the surf Heather Clark (Port Shepstone) and rookie pro Chelsea Georgeson (Aus) who clinched the ISA women?s world title at the same break a month ago.
