About Dean Randazzo

Dean was born in Atlantic City, and is proud to be a New Jersey native. Dean grew up surfing the waves off the New Jersey Coast, and went professional at the age of 21.

Dean qualified for the World Championship Tour in 1996, and for the five yeras following, he traveled the globe mastering waves. In June of 2001, Dean noticed some lumps in his neck which turned out to be Hodgkin’s disease, a cancer of the lymph nodes. Dean’s treatment consisted of chemotherapy, in addition to radiation that ran from July through Christmas Eve, 2001. Upon completion of his treatment, Dean went on to accomplish the following: Atlantic City Surfing Club Surfer Of the Year 2004, MVP of the 2004 X-Games, Gold Medal recipient of the 2005 X-Games, Recipient of Atlantic City Weekly‘s Top 40 Under 40.

Dean is also mentioned in the published Encyclopedia Of Surfing. Just shy of reaching the five year remission milestone, Dean was informed that the cancer had returned. During the summer of 2006, Dean received stem cell transplant at Thorton Hospital in San Diego, CA. Following the stem cell transplant, Dean went on to make the finals in Brazil at the World Tour event Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro in October, 2006. The next fall, Dean went on to win the Garden State Grudge Match, New Jersey’s top bout for Garden State surfing supremacy.

Dean is presently being treated for yet another bout of cancer. He will receive another stem cell transplant in April of 2008 in San Diego, CA. Dean feels strongly that continuing to surf during treatment has helped him maintain his positive attitude and physical stamina, which, therefore, contributed to the success of each treatment.

The formation of the Dean Randazzo Cancer is Dean’s finest accomplishment. Dean’s primary reason for creating the foundation is to help those battling cancer that do not have medical benefits. This was Dean’s biggest predicament when diagnosed in 2001. Dean’s goal is for the foundation to aid others, as well as raise funds for cancer reasearch.

It is with great excitement that Dean and Barbara welcomed their son, Dean Anthony Jr. into the world on January 1, 2007. Dean Anthony Jr. is Dean’s biggest inspiration, and a testament to all that cancer can be beaten.
