Congratulations to Peter Townend (P.T.) who was recently promoted to global brand manager for Rusty. P.T. will continue to manage the surf team as well as promotions and events. He will also continue to be the Rusty Brand Ambassador. P.T. will now spend more time globally promoting the brand name in concert with international licensees. Rusty also hired Bill Holford to take over the marketing and advertising reins. Holford comes to Rusty with a load of experience from the Disney Company. His recent position was director of sales and marketing for Disney Sports, which includes the Mighty Ducks and the California Angels. Bill is an avid surfer.

Oakley, Inc. announced the appointment of William “Bill” D. Schmidt to the position of chief executive officer, effective May 1. He succeeds Link Newcomb, who will remain on the board of directors and assume the newly created position of chief operating officer. Schmidt, 51, has been a member of Oakley’s board of directors since 1997 and formerly served as vice president of worldwide sports marketing for Quaker Oats’ Gatorade Division. Newcomb and recently appointed President Colin Baden will report directly to Schmidt.

At the end of the 1998 season O’Neill announced some new signings, starting with Roy Powers of Hanalei, Hawai’i, Shaun Burrell who recently made the transition to a full 100-percent deal with O’Neill, Eric Viscosi who climbed aboard the O’Neill ship in 1999, Maikai McKenna of Newport Beach, and David Speir who has been brought on to help farm an amateur team for the entire East Coast. Pete Johnson is the O’Neill Hawai’i Team Captain and has been working with the a small tight crew of kids that consists of Anastasia Ashley, Perry Turnball, Garrett Boner, John John, and Mickey Mitchell. Other notables surfing for Team O’Neill are Louis Tesoro, Noi Kaulukukui, Sean Peterson, Tyler Smith, Randy Bonds, Matt Rockhold, Jason Hinds, Brian Shelton, Killian Garland, Chris Lynch, and Jason “Rat Boy” Collins.

Smith Sport Optics added Josh Mohr and Troy Powell to the Southern

California surf team. Mohr hails from Orange County, California and is sponsored by Ron Jon’s, Arrow Surfboards, and Spank apparel. Powell is from Cayucos, California, and is sponsored by Volcom, Channel Islands, OAM, Etnies, and Wavelengths Surf Shop. They join surfers such as Conan Hayes, Pancho Sullivan, and Dan Malloy as part of the Smith team.

In a company meeting the shareholders of K2, Inc. elected three new people to the nine-member board of directors. Dr. Alfred E. Osborne, Jr., director of the Harold Price Center for Entrepreneurial Studies and Associate Professor of Business Economics in the Anderson Graduate School of Management at UCLA, was elected, along with current directors, Jerry E. Goldress and John H. Offermans.

Reef announced that John Wilson is the new national sales manager. He replaces Jim Watson. Wilson will take charge of U.S. sales for both the unisex and girls line. Prior to joining Reef, Wilson was brand manager for Oakley.

Redsand has announced the appointment of Rick Lohr to the post of brand merchandise manager. Lohr was formally the creative director at Katin.

Oxbow has announced the addition of Josh Mohr to their surf team.

On A Missionn announced the addition of WCT contender Timmy Curran, veteran/hero Brad Gerlach, and women’s world-title contender Serena Brooke to the professional team. New additions to the OAM amateur team include Mike Losness, Joel Centeio, and Holly Beck.

Gotcha has hired Brad Drew as its new team manager. Drew comes from Rusty where he worked in the marketing department.

Local Motion amateur team captain Eric Barton has been building the grom team with new team members from Kaua’i including Dustin Barca, Stephen Cohen, Evan Valiere, and Chris and Casey Satterfield.

Sole Survivor Corporation announced the hiring of Melanie Eagan as new product manager. Eagan’s responsibilities include Gramicci and Duke Kahanamoku Surfwear¿both apparel lines produced by Sole Survivor. She comes to Gramicci and Duke with five years’ experience in the apparel industry.

Nixon announced the addition of Mike Hoefer as director of North American sales. Hoefer was the former sales manager for Salomon snowboards where he spent the last year and a half.

Billabong USA recently signed Joey Buran as its national development officer to focus on overseeing and training the up-and-coming Billabong team riders throughout the U.S.

Planet Earth announced the signing of North Carolina pro Jesse Hines and Salt Creek amateur Tyler Moorehead. Hines joins Matt Rockhold, Ailbe McGarry, and Matt Cameron who recently returned to Huntington Beach.

XYZ Clothing and Platinum Skateboards have promoted Roger Harrell from East Coast sales manager to international and domestic sales manager.

Sole Technology, Inc. is welcoming some new staff members starting with Jeff Pool who’s decided to jump the Reef ship to become a territory sales manager for Sole Technologies; Suzanne Dachgruber is the new product development engineer coming from Burton where she was a product manager; Patrice Fernandez will be moving into the newly created position of director of international marketing; Rick Strassner has been promoted to the position of sales director from national sales director; and Rick Gonzalez to the position of music media relations representative. Gonzalez will handle music-related promotions and marketing for all Sole Technology brands.

Bryce Aberg has been hired as the new team manager for Mormaii wetsuits. Aberg was with Flojos sandals for the past three years. He inherits a team that includes Tom Curren, Shane Stoneman, and Hamish Campbell.

Planet Earth has hired Scott “Desi” Desiderio for in-house sales in the Southern California region and for surf-team promotions. Rick Jaramillo has also been brought on for in-house sales in the Northeast region.
