December 19th, 2005 (San Diego, CA) — Mick Fanning put on quite a performance at the ‘Greatest Show in Surf’ for the final act of the 2005 WCT season. His efforts earned him second place at the Rip Curl Pipeline Pro, the most prestigious WCT event of the year, and an overall second place finish in the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing. Fanning ends ’05 with a career high #3 ranking, and some solid momentum heading in to the 2006 WCT Season.
Mick’s performance at the Vans Triple Crown was nothing short of incredible. In the three legendary Hawaii events, Fanning placed 2nd at Haleiwa, made the quarters at Sunset, and placed 2nd at Pipe.
Reef’s Global Team Manager, Heath Walker, commented, “Fanning’s accomplishments in Hawaii and the 05 season in general are a testament to his drive, and a measure of the ridiculous amount of talent that he possesses. He’s going to go off in ’06.
Mick bounced back from his 2004 hamstring injury to claim two key WCT victories, and to finish off the year with a very impressive showing in Hawaii.
In regards to Mick’s goals in the upcoming season, he had this to say, “Andy’s a good friend of mine, but he’s clearly the man to beat, and I’m psyched to go head to head with him next year. Mick now holds the #3 ranking in the world and has all of the tenacity he will need when the WCT resumes on the Gold Coast in March 2006.
