Sunset Beach, Hawaii-

The 18th Annual Xcel Pro was completed in maximum size surf at Sunset Beach today as many of the top local surfers were upset early on. Big shifty peaks breaking from three different spots had competitors searching for waves between close out sets.

Trying times for the minimum requirement of three waves had surfers Sunny Garcia, Pancho Sullivan, Kaipo Jaquias and Michael Ho, all former Xcel champions, going down in the round of thirty two. Advancing out of the fourth round of competition and looking like favorites were AustraliansMatt Thompson and Paul Paterson who from the onslaught of round two (and through six rounds) got first and second respectively through the semifinals.

The fourty minute final featured the two Australians, California’s Gavin Beschen and Kauai’s Bruce Irons. Paul Paterson started out the heat with a huge set wave from outside SunsetPoint and powered all the way through the inside section for a 9.1 point scoring ride. Bruce Irons used a strategy of getting a high wave count and Matt Thompson, the other Australian in the final waited for set waves but never really got a rhythmgoing. Gavin Beschen’s plan of attack was to pick off the best waves on the middle peak and it paid off with a stand out tube ride on a ten foot wave which scored an average 9.8 on the judges card and became this years Xcel Pro champion.

“It’s been a long day and I figured I’d wait for the better waves, toward’s the end of the heat, I got lucky as the big sets stopped,” exclaimed a victorious Beschen, not usually known for his Sunset Beach prowess, “this is a big win for me as I move into the winter season”.
