Globe Sebastian Inlet Pro To Kick-Off 2005 WQS

Globe Sebastian Inlet Pro To Kick-Off 2005 WQS Season January 2-7

The 2005 WQS season kicks off at Sebastian Inlet, Florida on January 2, 2005 with the inaugural Globe Sebastian Inlet Pro. After more than a decade with no major tournaments, the 3-star-rated qualifying event marks the return of high-level professional surfing action to Sebastian’s three famed A-shape peaks. Sebastian Inlet was the early training ground for many of the world’s top competitive surfers including 6-time world champion Kelly Slater, 4-time world champion Lisa Andersen, 2001 world champion C.J. Hobgood, and current and former WCT contenders such as Damien Hobgood, Cory Lopez, Shea Lopez, Charlie Kuhn, Greg Loehr, Todd Holland, Matt Kechele, Danny Melhado, and Bryan Hewitson.

The contest is expected to draw more than 200 domestic and international competitors. The list of those who have already confirmed their entries is strong and includes Kelly Slater, Tom Curren, C.J. Hobgood, Damien Hobgood, Cory Lopez, and Tim Curran. The contest’s timing with the break in the WCT season is expected to draw even more of surfing’s elite into the field as the event draws nearer.

The Globe Sebastian Inlet Pro offers a prize purse of $50,000.00, with the winner taking home $7,000.00 and a 2005 Sea-Doo GTX three-seat personal watercraft donated by Sea-Doo.

“I’m really stoked to see this event come to Sebastian, said Slater. “It can be such a good wave and really has a lot of meaning to me as it’s basically my home break, he continued. “There hasn’t really been an event of any consequence there since I turned professional in the early nineties, and I’m really looking forward to competing in it.

The contest is the brainchild of Mitch Varnes, president of Board Sports Management and the ASP franchisee of the event. “I grew up in the area and remember the days of The Florida Pro, The Stubbies Classic, and The Bud Pro Tour when guys like Rabbit, P.T., Shaun Tomson, and Tom Carroll would come here to compete, Varnes said. “Many of the best surfers in the world are from this area, but we have an entire generation of Florida surfers who’ve never seen Kelly, C.J., or Damien surf in a contest. That’s a problem we intend to correct real soon.

The event is directly tied in with the semi-annual Surf Expo, which is held in Orlando at the Orange County Convention Center. Surf Expo is an industry-only show and routinely attracts more than 15,000 attendees from around the surfing world. “We’re very excited to be a part of the Globe Sebastian Inlet Pro, said Surf Expo Vice-President Lori Kisner. “It’s such a logical thing for us to have a surfing contest associated with our show. We’re looking forward to it. Surf Expo is a significant sponsor of the Globe Sebastian Inlet Pro.

The contest ends on the day Surf Expo begins, and the event’s awards ceremony will be held at the Surf Expo kick-off party on the evening of January 7, 2005. The event has received tremendous support and has a multitude of sponsors from both the Central Florida community and the surf industry. Title sponsor of the event is apparel and shoe manufacturer Globe International. “Globe is really excited to be the title sponsor of such a marquee event for the East Coast. It’s been years since a major international event has occurred in Florida, and we couldn’t be happier to make this happen, said Brian Robbins, Globe’s Surf Marketing Manager. “The hotbed of talent in Florida will get a chance to see Kelly, Damo, C.J. and Cory compete in Florida for the first time in years. We’re honored to be a part of it.

In addition to the regular WQS surfing competition, the Globe Sebastian Inlet Pro will also include the RB 5X Tow-At, an event that features five jet-ski towed surfers being slingshot into waves at speeds of up to 20 miles-per-hour. The results are spectacular with surfers executing aerials and carving maneuvers not possible through traditional surfing methods. The tow-at is sponsored by Red Bull and Sea-Doo.

The Globe Sebastian Inlet Pro is multi-faceted and will have many family-oriented events occurring during the week of the contest.
