Ian Walsh’s Menehune Mayhem Contest Fires Up Maui’s Youth

Maui, Hawaii - 04/08/08 - Ian Walsh’s annual Menehune Mayhem contest dominated Maui, pumping up young surfers across the Islands.

The conditions were prime, and the weather was perfect in typical Maui fashion this past Saturday at the Fifth Annual Ian Walsh Menehune Mayhem Surf Event at Ho’okipa Beach Park, in Maui, Hawaii.  Ian, with the help of his apparel sponsor O’Neill, put on an event to remember for the local kids of Hawaii.  Instead of the normal amateur contest breakdown of six man, 15 minute heats, the finals were divided into four man, 15 minute heats.  “This gives the kids a different type of contest,” said Walsh.  “I want them to get a feel for the competitions they will be involved in if they go pro.”

Walsh created the event in 2004 in an effort to introduce and promote surfing to the youth of Hawaii.  Each year, the Mayhem continues to grow, and 2008 was no exception.  “I was so stoked on the turnout this year.  The competition went down better than I ever could have imagined,” said Ian. “I was so impressed with the way the kids surfed.  It was unreal.”

The heats were broken down into gender/age divisions and awards were given out to the winners of each division, which special awards given out honoring Steve Cooney and Eric Diaz, two Maui rippers and former friends of Walsh who have since passed away. “These are sportsmanship awards,” explains Walsh. “These went to the kids who really stood out during the event.”  There were also prizes for top finishers and a ton of free swag for all the competitors. The winners of the final heats are as follows:

Girls 11 and Under: 1) Dax McGill, Girls 12-14: 1) Lani Doherty, Girls 15-17: 1) Susan Walczal-Pol
Boys 11 and Under: 1) Chaz Kinoshita, Boys 12-13: 1) Tyler Larronde, Boys 14-15: 1) Tanner Henderson, Boys 16-17: 1) Albee Layer
