Dubbed the OK Fiji Pro, Outerknown has signed a three-year deal with the WSL to sponsor both the men’s and women’s events.
“We’re very excited to welcome Outerknown to the WSL family and look forward to working with them to showcase the world’s best surfers at one of the most incredible events on the Championship Tour,” WSL Chief Commercial Officer Beth Greve said.
Founded in 2014 by 11-time world champion Kelly Slater and one of GQ’s “Menswear Designers of 2014” John Moore, the duo has established a company focused on creating good-looking men’s fashion, while simultaneously placing a demand on sustainability.
As Slater says of the company on its website, “We created Outerknown to smash the formula. To lift the lid on the traditional supply chain and prove you can actually produce great looking menswear in a sustainable way.”
Fiji has long been a home-away-from-home to Slater, who owns property there and has won the Fiji event four times over the years. Having his company step up and fill a void for the WSL in Fiji makes a lot of sense.
“I fell in love with the small island of Tavarua a long time ago and I go back a few times every year,” Slater said in the press release. “It’s definitely my favorite escape and may be home to the happiest people on earth.”
Add in the fact that the WSL bought a majority stake in the Kelly Slater Wave Company last fall, and it makes that much more sense that Slater was tapped to bring Outerknown onboard in a year when the WSL lost its major tour sponsor of Samsung.
We can’t think of any other sport where a company’s owner and founder will also be competing in a premiere event that that company is the title sponsor of.
Then again, this is Kelly Slater we’re talking about.
The OK Fiji Pro starts with the women’s contest on May 28 – June 2, followed by the men’s event from June 4 – 16.
