(Tuesday December 16th 2008 , Gold Coast Qld), Immediate Release: A slight pulse in the swell provided excellent small waves as the blue ribbon Boys 16 division hit the water at the Rip Curl GromSearch at Duranbah Beach.
Local surfers managed to dominate today lead by Bilinga's Mitch Duggan who posted two impressive heat wins and included the day's top scoring ride with a 9.16 and that wave was eventually awarded the SNICKERS wave of the day!
"It's a little strange coming from the Australian Junior Titles in Margaret River last week where we had to deal with some seriously big surf to the small surf we're dealing with here" said Duggan after his round two heat win.
"At least the swell has come up a bit from yesterday and conditions are super clean so it's actually quite fun – It would be a great event to win and probably this one on my home beaches offers me my best chance"
Winners of all seven Rip Curl GromSearch national Series events in the 16 and under Boy and Girl divisions get to meet in a national GromSearch final at Bells Beach next March with the winners of the national final then competing in an international final during the ASP World Tour event at Bells Beach during Easter.
Local Coolangatta surfer Sol Pereira-Ryan was also very impressive today progressing through to round three. Pereira-Ryan also went to Western Australia for the Australian Titles last week and was a standout on the big days but showed no problems adapting to todays smaller waves.
"We've surfed small waves on the Goldy for well over a month so I'm pretty used to it, I'd prefer it big but what ever we get I'm happy to surf it."
Other standout surfers today included Casuarina's Damo Norman, Central Coast NSW surfer Wade Carmichael and Sunshine Coasters Paul McGreggor and Elijah Criaco.
With northerly winds moving onto the Gold Coast along with searing hot days organizers are looking to run tomorrows event on the northern beaches of the Gold Coast and a call will be made early tomorrow morning – Event hotline number is 30306388
