Pro surfers help shark attack victim on Maui

A 16 year old bodyboarder is lucky to have both feet after being attacked while surfing near Kahului Harbor on Maui’s South Shore. Apparently the young man was riding a bodyboard and wearing rubber fins on his feet at the time of the attack, which occurred at a section of reef known as ‘ledges’. The victim was just outside of the lineup when he was bitten on the foot by a shark. According to witnesses, his fins saved his foot, as the injuries would have been far worse without the thick rubber. Pro surfers Kai Barger, Dusty Payne, and Tanner Hendrickson were the only other surfers in the water, and paddled the victim to shore where they used a leash to make a tourniquet and called for help. The victim is in stable condition after suffering lacerations on his foot, and is expected to make a full recovery.
