Update…. Thursday afternoon, North Shore, Oahu The Quiksilver Big Wave Invitational in Memory of Eddie Aikau event director George Downing provided an update today on the anticipated extra large surf episodes forecast to hit the North Shore of Oahu, starting tomorrow afternoon, peaking early Friday, and then being reinforced Monday/Tuesday.

“What we are seeing is the ‘old’ pattern of waves – I’m talking 15, 20 years ago,” said Downing.

“We see several large wave episodes in December that don’t have the best trailing wind conditions. But come the first week of January, to mid-January, those swells should experience much better wind conditions.

“What we need is a large high pressure system to the east of the (Hawaiian) islands, which we don’t have now. That forces the storms up to the Aleutions – where we want them to track. But what we see with these storms this week and next is that they are barreling through at a very rapid speed close to the islands and straight across to the Mainland. I think we will all be able to enjoy the holidays and I’m looking at early- to mid-January as being very promising for us.”
