All great athletes use their emotions to their advantage. Today, at the Quiksilver Gold Coast Pro, Joel Parkinson used a pinch of anger to earn a perfect 10 in his round 5 heat.
Joel’s day started with a bitterly fought loss to rival Jordy Smith. And after a few heated paddle-battles Parkinson came up .14 short.
This put him into an elimination round 5 heat against Julian Wilson. The two Aussies have had several nail-biting heats in the past. You may recall their Hurley Pro Trestles heat in which Julian won with a shuv-it, leading Parko to make some very vocal objections.
After beating Wilson in round 5 Parkinson commented, “Yeah, I guess I have some rivalries going today, eh? I surfed against Jordy earlier… and I have a good one with Julian… They’re the heats you live for.”
Parkinson’s 10-point ride marks the first perfect wave of the event. But expect Parko to have plenty of fuel for fire in next round’s quarterfinal matchup against Jordy Smith. After Jordy beat him in round 3, it will be interesting to see whether Joel can use his competitive flair to avenge the loss.
Watch the fireworks here.
With the swell fading out, the event may go on hold for a couple days.
