San Diego, CA (May 2nd, 2006) — In conditions described as ‘skyscraper high, and icy cold’, British born Russel Winter scored a unanimous perfect 10 in familiar waters to win the 5* WQS O’Neill Highland Pro at Brims Ness in Scotland. Russel pocketed $12,000 for the victory, as well as 2000 valuable QS points.
Still elated from his fresh win at the O’Neill Scottish open the week prior, Winter ripped through the quarters and semis, dispatching Luke Munro and Kieren Perrow to put him through to the finals.
The stage was set for a nail-biter against Brazilian Bernardo Miranda, however Russ was surfing at his absolute best on his home turf in front of friends and family. Russel’s piece de resistance came with about 10 minutes left on the clock, when he pulled into a massive barrel. The crowd on the shore grew anxious the longer he was inside, until at last he shot out of the tube, waving his arms with pure exhilaration. The judges scores were unanimous -- a perfect 10. He soon topped that off just a couple of minutes later with a solid. 8.33, and Miranda was left trailing in his wake.
Russel stated ecstatically, “That was a sick barrel, and I had no idea it would be that long, it was an amazing wave to get in a final. It is great to win in Britain, and bring it home in the 1st Scottish QS. O’Neill has put on a great contest and shown that when it works, the waves here are world class. It has been an amazing 2 weeks for me, I’m stoked. Cheers guys.”
