Reports Of Missing Great Lakes Surfer Unfounded

As reported on

Reports of a missing surfer in Lake Michigan Wednesday evening turned out to be unfounded after helicopters and coast guard officials found no sign of a person in the water, officials said.

The Chicago Fire Department's dive team and helicopters were requested Wednesday evening to assist the Evanston Fire Department in their search of a missing surfer in the lake, according to Fire Media Affairs Cmdr. Will Knight.

The Evanston Fire Department requested assistance about 6:50 p.m. with locating a surfer in the water near Dempster Street, according to Knight.

Helicopters and coast guard officials did a thorough search of the area and found nothing, Knight said.

The person who reported the man in the water said he was wearing a red hooded sweatshirt, and officials saw a man matching that description safely on a nearby beach.

The caller may have been “mistaken,” Knight said.
