O’Neill/ Brave New World Family Surf Challenge

MANASQUAN, NJ- July 17, 2002- This past weekend O’Neill hosted the first annual Brave New World Family Surf Challenge with great success.

“The vibe was incredible. The kids yelling at their dads to hurry up and catch a wave so the next team member could paddle out was just one of the highlights,” said Gary Clayton, the East Coast representative for O’Neill, who went on to say, “We were a little flexible on the format and no one cared because it was all about having fun with your family and friends.”

The competition consisted of 12 families, four members per team. There were two rounds of three heats. Each heat had four families. The top family in each heat advanced to the next round. In the final round there were four families competed for the title, but it was the Duerr family from Brielle that won the event.

Along with the FSC (Family Surf Challenge) there was also had a free surf camp with 50 participants. Team O’Neill riders Paul Reineke from Florida and Tim Reyes from California flew in to judge and help run the camp.

“Every single family came up during and after the event and said this was the most fun they have ever had at a contest,” said Clayton.
