Rip Curl Pro Zarautz
ASP 5-Star WQS Men’s Event #33
Zarautz Basque Country
September 9-14, 2008

June 26, 2008: – – The Rip Curl Pro Zarautz, an Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Qualifying Series (WQS) 5-Star event, will be one of the most important events of the 2008 ASP European Pro Surf Tour. Zarautz, famous surf city who gathered the world’s best surfers in the 90s, came back on the ASP European WQS calendar in 2007 with a successful 3-Star rated event won by local hero and current ASP Top 45 member Aritz Aranburu (EUK), and now awaits the best ASP WQS campaigners for a much expected 5-Star contest.

The Rip Curl Pro Zarautz, which will take place from September 9 to 14, will gather for the first time in a decade the world’s best qualifiers and give the Basque Country its first ever main World Qualifying Series event. Known for its consistent beachbreaks and warm welcome to all surfing fans from around the world, all eyes will be on Zarautz for the end of the European summer leg.

The Rip Curl Pro Zarautz will end six weeks of intense action along Europe’s idyllic coasts and see potential ASP World Tour qualifiers rise on the international ratings before the WQS take a three-week break. With both ASP European and international ratings’ points to be clinched, the 5-Star event will bring momentum and pressure among the best surfers in the world.

“It’s a big chance for Rip Curl to be associated to Zarautz, one of the best surf spot in the Basque Country,” Rip Curl’s Spain Marketing manager Quitterie Devilder said. “We have been supporting local surfers for a long time and it is a great achievement to offer an ASP WQS 5-Star event to our European surfers.”

“Thanks to the great support of the city council of Zarautz, we are proud to be involved in the return of one of the best pro surfing shows in Europe this season,” Devilder said. “We hope that the legendary Spanish public will fill Zarautz’ beach during six days, and that all European surfers will be back in 2009 !”

With eleven events rated 4 to 6-Star Prime on the ASP World Qualifying Series, European surfing keeps growing year after year and the Rip Curl Pro Zarautz will be a crucial stop on this year’s schedule.

“Zarautz was one of the biggest European events in the 90s,” ASP Europe CEO Julie Audibert said. “Last year’s ASP WQS 3-Star event offered a great show and the enthusiasm of both local authorities and public was huge. We are very grateful to see the support Rip Curl and the town of Zarautz give to professional surfing.”
