The City Council tabled the Vote on the Ponto Vision Plan without an Environmental Impact Report (EIR) from the June 28th Council Meeting to next Tuesday, July 19th. It appears we overwhelmed the City Staff with their own facts (their own Traffic Study indicates that there will be an additional 12,407 extra daily trips from this proposed project yet there in nothing concrete in the plan to address what happens come June, July, August or September when adding 750 hotel rooms, 3 parking garages, 10 restaurants, townhouses, condos, offices, and a commercial center will certainly have some impact on the already bottle-necked beach traffic on Hwy 101) and they needed two weeks to get back to the city council.

Ponto State Beach already suffers from severe water pollution. In the last month, Batiquitos Lagoon and beach area have been closed twice for several days each time due apparently to a mysterious sewer malfunction; 46,000 gallons of sewage on the most recent. Dense development of the magnitude spelled out in the Ponto Vision Plan would worsen an already unacceptable situation by creating a high volume of urban run off with litter, fertilizers, oil and pesticides. There is no mitigation identified in the Vision Plan or the Mitigated Neg. Dec. to address this either. These all encompassing issues will, more than likely, never be addressed with the individual project permitting process without an Environmental Impact Report.

We are trying to make a difference and make the City of Carlsbad act in a responsible manner by performing an EIR for this sensitive area on the California coast, but we need concerned concerned residents to come to this meeting and show their support for clean water and the environment.
