Spy Partners With Sustainable Surf
Waste to Waves Program Turns Trash to Slash
CARLSBAD, Calif.—SPY Optic™ today announced a partnership with newly launched, non-profit organization, Sustainable Surf, to champion its "Waste to Waves" program centered on recycling waste packaging foam –expanded polystyrene (plastic #6), aka "EPS" or "styrofoam"– into fresh, eco-friendlier surfboard blanks. The pilot program launches today with nearly 40 participating surf shops housing branded in-store collection boxes into which customers may deposit recyclable foam.
"You'd have to have your head literally in the sand to not realize that there's a huge problem with plastic pollution in our oceans and on our beaches," says SPY "Green Guy" Mark Marovich. "As surfers and a surf brand, we at SPY are excited to partner with Sustainable Surf in their novel and downright cool approach to calling attention to and educating about this important issue, in particular, and to wastefulness in general."
While the surfing world has many notable groups focused on important environmental and social responsibility issues, Sustainable Surf is unique in its focus on making the surf industry more environmentally accountable. The founders are experts in environmental advocacy, consumer product certification, sustainable business development and sustainability science.
"The launch of our new Waste to Waves program is a dream come true," says Michael Stewart, co-founder and partnerships director of Sustainable Surf. " By helping surfers easily turn their 'trash into slash', we are working to keep plastic pollution out of our coastal environments, allowing the surfing community to be directly involved in creating greener, more sustainable surfing products. Everybody wins here and who wouldn't want a 'greener' surfboard blank that offered the same performance qualities, but produces half the negative CO2 that directly affects our oceans?"
The Waste to Waves campaign is made possible as a collaboration between Sustainable Surf, SPY, Reef, Marko Foam and the Surfrider Foundation.
