Surfer bitten by shark in New Smyrna Beach

As reported on

A surfer was bitten by a shark Sunday morning near the south jetty in New Smyrna Beach, a beach official said, marking the second bite in the area in as many days.

Adam Tobin, 24, Merritt Island was surfing about 10:30 a.m. when a shark bit his right calf, said Volusia County Beach Patrol Capt. Jack Driskell.

The incident occurred about a block north of where a shark nipped the foot of a 21-year-old surfer from Lake Mary on Saturday, Driskell said.

Tobin was able to get out of the water on his own and was treated on the scene by lifeguards before a friend took him to Bert Fish Medical Center in New Smyrna Beach. He was released after receiving 40 stitches in his leg, Driskell said.

Sunday’s bite was eighth recorded this year in Volusia County, according to Beach Patrol records.
