Surfing America Prime Series: San Onofre Highlights

Surfing America Prime presented by Got Milk?
West Coast event #5
Upper Trestles, San Onofre State Beach
February 9 & 10, 2013

Surfing America took the Prime Series back to Upper Trestles for our 5th year last weekend. Every year the conditions and weather have been questionable up to the day of the event, but Uppers has never disappointed. This year was no different. A weather front blew through on Friday with horizontal rain and hail, but it all cleared up by Friday night. Competitors were greeted by waist to chest high plus lines pouring down the point. Light offshore winds quickly cleaned up the sea sickness from the previous day. A 6.3 foot high "King Tide" had no detrimental effects on the morning conditions and the waves did nothing but improve as the weekend progressed.

There was a pitched battle in Boys U14 as ratings leader Eithan Osborne faced a surging John Mel in the finals. Eithan has won 3 events this season, but John took the win at Steamer Lane in January, and was a force to be reckoned with at Uppers. John took the win, going two season wins to Eithan's 3 as we head into the final event of the Surfing America Prime west coast season March 16 & 17 at the Huntington Beach Pier.

In Boys U16, local boy Kei Kobayashi was showing his knowledge all weekend, working his way into the final where he ran into a trio of PacSun USA Surf Team members. Griffin Colapinto and Jake Marshall were blowing up along with Thelen McKinna-Worrell. In the end it was Griffin taking the win with Jake Marshall a bit wave starved, taking 4th. Thelen took second and Kei held on for 3rd.

Many of the big cats were away in Puerto Rico surfing the Rip Curl Pro in Boys U18, so the younger surfers surfing up took advantage of the situation. PacSun USA Surf Team members Jake Marshall, Griffin Colapinto and Thelen McKinna-Worrell were all double finalists and joined Huntington Beach's Matt Passaquindici in a hard fought final. Thelen ended up taking his first Prime win surfing up a division followed by Jake, Griffin and Matt.

The girls surfed Sunday only and were enjoying the fun conditions. Meah Collins kept her roll in the Prime Series going with another double division win, heating up the season championship title race with fellow PacSun USA Surf Team member Tia Blanco. Carlsbad's Kylie Loveland found the Uppers right to her liking and tore them up on her way to 2nd place showings in both the Girls U16 and Girls U18 divisions. Malia Osterkamp and Rachel Tominaga rounded out the Girls U16 final with Tia Blanco and Samantha Lamirand taking 3rd and 4th in the Girls U18 final.

Event No. 6, the last of the Prime regular season, is scheduled for March 16 and 17 at the Huntington Beach Pier.
