One Week, Three Boards, One Champion
SANTA BARBARA, Calif., Feb. 26, 2008 -The triathlon of a new generation, Ultimate BoarderT, is the only event of its kind: a one-week competition to find the first athlete who can conquer the art of surfing, skateboarding and snowboarding. Opening the field to both amateur and professional athletes, the Ultimate BoarderT, held from April 13-19, 2008, gives unknown riders a chance to shine alongside the pros and compete for the first-ever Ultimate BoarderT champion title and a first place prize of $30,000. The snowboard competition will be held on April 13 at Squaw Valley (Lake Tahoe, Calif.) followed by the surf competition on a date to be determined from April 16-18 at C Street (Ventura, Calif.) and will complete with the skateboard competition and awards ceremony on April 19 at the Ventura County Fairgrounds (Ventura, Calif.).
“This event is all about providing a venue were we can showcase and discover a unique and truly gifted athlete,” said Founder & CEO Tim Hoover. “An individual who possesses balance, skill, athleticism and endurance in three of the top board sports in the world.”
Competitors will embark on a journey of a lifetime. Many have reached success in their core sport. They have already challenged themselves further by crossing over to other board sports, longing for an even greater challenge to prove their athletic ability.
Now they will be given the opportunity to prove to themselves and the world, that they can master the art of being the best boarder in snow, skate and surf. Registration is not officially closed until February 29, 2008 but the impressive roster of athletes from all across North America already includes, Aaron Astorga (Carlsbad, Calif.), Andy Finch (Truckee, Calif.), Nathan Fletcher (San Clemente, Calif.), John John Florence (Haleiwa, HI), Omar Hassan (Newport Beach, Calif.), Tim Humphreys (Basking Ridge, NJ), Justin Lamoureux (Squamish, BC), Mike Morrissey (Laguna Beach, Calif.), Todd Richards (Encinitas, Calif.), Mike Rogers (Cocoa Beach, FL), Chris Senn (Maui, HI), Chad Shetler (San Clemente, Calif.), Tosh Townend (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and more.
Contest Format and Prize Purse
Athletes will compete in a triathlon style format with each competitor judged on an individual basis. At the completion of each event competitors will be ranked first through 50th place. The contestant who consistently places the highest in all three sports and has the lowest number of ranking points overall will be crowned the Ultimate BoarderT. An athlete must compete in all three sports in order to be included in the final event results and prize purse.
In the snowboarding portion of the event a panel of World Cup certified judges and celebrity guest judge, Jim Rippey, will judge the competitors skills on a slopestyle course. Surfers will compete in a traditional four or five man heat format and be scored by ASP sanctioned judges and celebrity guest judge Shaun Tomson. The skateboarding portion will be comprised of a mini ramp, street course and also be judged by World Cup certified judges and celebrity guest judge, Christian Hosoi.
In a style similar to the Tour de France, a blue jersey will be awarded to the overall leader at the end of each stage of the competition.
The one-of-a-kind athletes will be competing for a combined $50,000 prize purse, with $30,000 awarded to the first-ever Ultimate Boarder champion, $10,000 to second place, $5,000 to third place. The remaining prize money will be awarded through tenth place.
In addition to watching world-class athletes push their limits in the competitions, spectators will have an opportunity to partake in a variety of daily events including free demos, autograph sessions, vendors and more. Following the awards ceremony on April 19, all fans are invited to attend the ‘ultimate’ live bbenefit concert and celebration extravaganza, which will honor the contestants, family, friends, fans and raise funds to support Boarding House Mentors, a non-profit organization that introduces at-risk youth to the exhilaration of snowboarding, skateboarding and surfing.
