The Whale Warriors
By Peter Heller
The ocean is quite possibly the most important priority in any surfer's life; I know it sits atop my list. It's terrifying to learn that "90% of the large predatory fish, the tuna, swordfish, marlin, sharks – vital to the health of ocean ecosystems as we know them – have vanished since 1950," as Peter Heller tells us in this valiant saga of Captain Paul Watson and his crew aboard the Farley Mowat, which is the flagship vessel of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, and the only vegan "pirate ship" to my knowledge. Heller sets out with the crew and is immediately faced with the reality that the conservationists aboard will use any force necessary, including ramming, to stop the catastrophic slaughter of innocent whales in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary. The Farley and crew encounter 35 foot+ seas along the ice-trodden Antarctic coast, as they slice through the bureaucratic bullshit that allows the Japanese to continue their illegal whaling "research." If you care about the ocean, or the mark we as humans are leaving on this world, this is a must-read and will bring to light one of the most inhumane operations against animals in our time, showing that the brave Farley crew is devoted to standing up for those who can't themselves. –Ryan Brower
