With the third round of the year’s last Prime-rated event hitting the water at Sunset Beach, it was judgment day for the handful of 2013 tour hopefuls who are near the qualifying bubble, and several surfers saw their tour hopes dashed in the lumpy overhead walls Monday.
Jean da Silva, Gabe Kling, Granger Larsen, Joan Duru, Raoni Monteiro, Heitor Alves, and Nathaniel Curran all lost today, effectively extinguishing any shot at making the tour for next season. Raoni and Heitor will have one more chance, however, as they are seeded into the Billabong Pipe Masters.
Kieren Perrow, Nate Yeomans, Adam Melling, and Tanner Gudauskas, are the remaining soldiers who need a big result to vault themselves into contention. Tuesday will most likely decide how they spend the next year of their lives.
Melling and Perrow also have Pipeline to re-qualify. Perrow has been in this situation before, in both 2010 and 2011 he pulled off the miracle run, finishing second in 2010 and winning the Pipe Masters in 2011 to qualify. We will see if he can pull off the hat trick.
The event is expected to finish tomorrow in excellent surf.
